lifesupport520x280

Genesis 1 forms a foundation for much of what we understand about life and how to live it. God creates humanity in His own image and delegates to humanity the responsibility for the care of creation. In Genesis 1:28 we find important truths about how we are to live life, support life, and even mulitiply life on this earth as God’s image bearers. We see that life thrives and multiplies when we live sustainably.

This message looks at the foundational source our efforts at sustaining and uncovers the reality that God’s sustaining grace undergirds and enables our efforts at sustainability.

The Green Elephant series #1 – Where’s My Piggy Bank?

It’s the topic that we all know is there in the church but no one wants to talk about…money. Any yet, Jesus talked more about money than any other subject. In this mini-series we will look at some key biblical principles about money. Some of what the Bible says may surprise and some will surely challenge. It’s time to acknowledge and address this elephant in the church.

In this first message of the series we learn…
The world is full of things to treasure and full of people who treasure these things. However, Jesus tells us in Luke 12 that if we treasure anything as more valuable than God then we are certain to find our hearts filled with fear and anxiety. Money and things are not meant to be treasured in and of themselves, instead God has given us money and things for a purpose. The purpose of money is to maximize our treasure in heaven, treasuring God as infinitely more valuable than anything.

Ownership matters. When I possess something as its owner I also possess the authority to determine the usage of that thing. This series will answer questions of ownership and management. It will look at the world, our lives, and our resources in light of the reality that God owns everything and therefore sets the parameters for our management of all we have and are. This final message in the series looks at our stewardship as the body of Christ. Since God’s family is made up of participants and not spectators how does that impact the way in which we manage our function within our local church?

Shema series #5: A Giving Thing

message text: Luke 16:1-15

I remember watching the movie Finding Nemo with my children and how they would get the giggles near the end of the movie when Nemo’s dad and Dorrie are chased by the seagulls squawking “mine, mine, mine” over and over again. It may be silly when a flock of seagulls act this way but there is nothing silly when followers of Jesus Christ act in like manner. When Jesus speaks of loving God with all our strength this is what he is speaking about, having an attitude that recognizes and treats everything as he desires.
